Each day at the Board of Education, Dr. Cammarata is busy solving problems, helping people and making sure our schools get what they need. Here are some examples of Jerry’s commitment to Staten Island and Board of Education system.

Physical Plants:

  • New Dorp High SchoolRewired the home economics department so heavy refrigeration equipment could work.
  • Curtis High SchoolSecured painting and wall repairs to the pool.
  • P.S. 37Repaired the air-conditioning
  • P.S. 56Secured modern fiber optic wiring for technology from the School Construction Authority.
  • S.I. Technical High School – Expedited the work for the new athletic field.
  • P.S. 5Expedited the coordination of work for the new gym at Mount Loretto.
  • Franklin K. Lane High School, Queens – Secured elevator repairs to keep the school compliant with handicap accessibility.

Constituents:

  • Problem: RSA letter needed for continuation of special education services, i.e. physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech. Outcome: Obtained RSA authorization for child. Ongoing problem year after year with a number of constituents.
  • Problem: One on one para for special education child. Outcome: Obtained para for child.
  • Problem: High school student not performing well, skipping school. Outcome: Parent and Principal presented an Educational Plan for student and parent to accept for implementation.
  • Problem: Child released from after school program. Outcome: Child reinstated to program.
  • Problem: Elementary school student being harassed by classmate. Outcome:  Principal met with parent and moved child to a new classroom.
  • Problem: Junior high school student being harassed by a group of boys from school. Parent requested a variance to another school. Outcome: The variance was granted.
  • Problem: An elementary school parent requested a variance for the child to attend school of choice outside the home district. Outcome: The Variance was granted.
  • Problem: An elementary school child had asthma and smoking by school personnel affected the child’s breathing. Outcome: The school staff met with the plant manager of school facilities and the smoking problem was resolved.
  • Problem: A high school student requested a variance to attend another school. Outcome: The Variance was granted.
  • Problem: An elementary school parent requested a hazard bus variance. Outcome: The variance was denied; the parent was informed by the office to appeal the decision. The parent is appealing the decision. (This represents dozens of requests the office receives in this area).
  • Problem: An Elementary school parent requested her twins be kept in the same class. The Principal denied the parent’s request. Outcome: After meetings with district personnel, the parent was granted a same class placement for the twins.
  • Problem: A junior high school special education student was on a bus that got him to school late, thus, missing his first period math class regularly. Outcome:  After several discussions with bus personnel, the child was placed on an earlier bus.
  • Problem: A special education pre-schooler was denied services that parents requested. Outcome: Parents were guided and instructed how to access an Impartial Hearing.
  • Problem: An elementary school special education parent was seeking placement. Outcome: Placement granted. (Many of cases like this).
  • Problem: An elementary school special education parent expressed dissatisfaction with her child’s not having an opportunity to interact with non-disabled students. Outcome: Student support services sent the parent the New Continuum of Special Education Services report for the parent to review.
  • Problem: Homebound instruction was requested. Outcome: Expedited homebound instructional service was granted. NOTE: This type of request is on the top ten list and creates a great deal of frustration for parents. Homebound instructional service is requested from parents of children in the elementary and high schools as well as the private and parochial schools; the NYC BOE is responsible for this citywide.
  • Problem: A teacher inquired why Russian language classes at Bronx High School of Science were curtailed. Outcome: Russian language requests by students dramatically dropped over the years.
  • Problem: A legal guardian requested school placement for five children new to the United States. Outcome: All children were placed immediately.
  • Problem: A parent of a special education student requested academic tutoring. Outcome: Tutoring was provided the student.
  • Problem: Multiple requests from parents around the Island to have project read services restored. Outcome: The parents were referred to the District’s Superintendent who approves all academic programs.
